27 Oct 2020: Why should we let the Montrachets, Meursault, Volnay and Pommard get all the glory? There are three delightful villages set in the valleys behind the main Côte which are delivering steadily more exciting wines as these cooler, formerly sometimes marginal, locations have been warming up. These days there is more flesh on the bones of the whites and reds of St-Romain and Auxey-Duresses, while the reds of Monthélie are also excellent value propositions, by Burgundy standards.

31 Aug 2020: 2010 has proven to be an unsuspected star for the red wines of Burgundy. It did not feel like a great vintage at the time, overshadowed by the sunshine of 2009, but opinions started to improve when we tasted the wines in barrel, and now 2010 is established as one of the success stories of the new century.

9 Sep 2020: This unusual vineyard in Chambolle-Musigny should not be overlooked. It is the only lieu-dit in all of Burgundy which has four classifications from generic to grand cru (as part of Musigny). We have topped and tailed the tasting to bring two excellent village examples and all four of the wines which are regularly made at 1er Cru level.

19 Sep 2020: Question: Where to go in Burgundy for fine quality at fair prices? Answer: to the very best producers of the Côte Chalonnaise. I have chosen six of my personal favourite producers who leap out of the ordinary, as viewed through the prism of the deliciously accessible 2017 vintage. Two whites and four reds will help us to explore this often overlooked region.

13 August 2020: Time to take a good look at the very best of Morey St Denis. Two wines from Clos de la Roche will face two from Clos St Denis: will producer or terroir lead the way? The two grand crus are intertwined but typically show quite different characters. Just as fascinating is the rivalry between Clos de Tart and Clos des Lambrays. For all these, I will be evaluating what role the winemaker plays and what we can attribute to the vineyard.

20 August 2020: If ever there was a misunderstood appellation in Burgundy, it must be Corton. So much wine classified as Grand Cru, so many different styles. Much of it is very good wine, not all of it deserves to be Grand Cru. But if you study the appellation in detail, you will find the wine to suit you, and often at very fair pricing. You will not be disappointed if you tune in to this masterclass.

24 August 2020: Once in a while a vintage comes along which stands out just that little bit more. It is not always so obvious for white Burgundy, but a clear favourite for the vintage of the last decade in white must be: 2014! Modest (plus) in red but magical in white, 2014 has already provided much enjoyment, and the best whites have much more still to offer.

27 August 2020: Pay attention at the back – Aligoté is coming to town! No longer the grape relegated to receiving a slug of crème de cassis to make a vin blanc Kir, Aligoté has taken the wine world by storm in the last two years. The younger generation of vignerons have started to produce some truly exciting wines, and not just from Aligoté’s own appellation, Bouzeron, but throughout the region. 13 July 2020: Meursault may not have any grands crus to its name, but this favourite white Burgundy village is chock full of star producers. In this webinar, I led us through a line-up that covers the three finest 1ers crus and a magical array of the finest producers inside and outside the village.

What makes it even more intriguing is that there are just 5 producers, and their holdings all run up and down the slope parallel to each other. It is rare to be able to sample all five from the same vintage at the same time to admire and contrast the different style of wine-making.

30 July 2020: I lead us through each of the different Montrachet grands crus, each with its own character as decided by its place on the slope and what is going on below the ground.

We delve into the detail of vintage and vigneron distinctions to complete this overview of White Burgundy’s finest hillside. The session is rounded out by a taste of one of the great vintages of Bonneau du Martray’s Corton-Charlemagne, a vintage which was not shown during the zoom dedicated to the domaine.

6 August 2020: The most dynamic white wine appellation in Burgundy at the moment is Pouilly-Fuissé. There has been a surge in the number of top flight producers at work, perhaps encouraged by the up-coming classification of 1ers crus. I take us through the characteristics of the different villages, which make up the appellation, outline which vineyards are about to be ranked 1er cru and illustrate just why Pouilly-Fuissé deserves to be back in the limelight.

18 June 2020: Benjamin Leroux is one of the new generation Burgundian winemakers, who has made a big impression in a relatively short time. Benjamin, the gifted manager/winemaker of Domaine Comte Armand launched his own label with the 2007 vintage and works from a brand-new winery in the centre of Beaune (just off the Boulevard) that he shares with Dominique Lafon and two other wine growers.

23 May 2020: 2015 is certainly a candidate for an ‘All Time Great’ rating. But just how good are the red wines of Burgundy in 2015? Do they combine the power of 2005 with the grace of 2010? Do they have the potential to develop extra depth and layers of flavour with age. To try to answer these questions Jasper looked at this highly touted vintage through the lens of six samples from different parts of the Côte.

15 June 2020: Myths about Corton-Charlemagne abound, but it is accepted that part of the vineyard did once belong to Charlemagne, King of the Franks, Holy Roman Emperor, reformer of education, father of Western Europe and famously, a wine lover…

Almost unique among Burgundy growers for only producing grand cru wines, Domaine Bonneau du Martray owns 11 hectares of vines on the famous hill of Corton, one of the largest holdings of grand cru vines of any Burgundy producer. The vast majority of the vines are chardonnay with just 1.5 hectares of pinot noir, making Corton-Charlemagne and Corton respectively.

11 June 2020: Is this the new mainstream? Or are biodynamic practitioners “Out where the buses don’t run”? Certainly a number of cult domaines have espoused this philosophy of grape growing and winemaking.

To talk us through how the biodynamic movement has developed in Burgundy, I have selected six wines from among the most noted producers, so we can judge for ourselves what biodynamics really means in wine.

2 May 2020: Chablis is a gem, known to many but ignored by many more. Maybe the sea of mass market Chablis – and indeed misrepresentations of Chablis over the years – has hidden from view the joy which this region can bring, in authentic hands. Though we shall discuss Chablis as a whole, from Petit Chablis to Grand Cru, the tasting will feature 6** 1er cru wines from exciting producers, both classic names and some unconventional newcomers. What really counts? Soil, the exposure of the slope, or how you make the wine?

9 May 2020: Red Burgundy: To destem or not to destem, that is the question. 
The latest in our line of top level Burgundy webinars will review three pairs of wines with each pair showing differing approaches to the complex question of what to put in your fermentation tanks: just the berries or the whole bunch of grapes, stems and all. Even the great producers have opposite views, though sadly we have decided not to put Henri Jayer up against Mme Bize Leroy this time round.

9 Dec 2020: There are many rituals over Christmas in the Morris household. We celebrate it on both 24th, Scandinavian fashion, and again on 25th in English style. I fill in the details, while we taste a selection of wines that should adorn the Christmas table. Make sure to have  a hunk of mature Comte cheese to nibble at alongside Jean Macle’s Château Chalon.

My marathon tasting of the 2019 vintage in Burgundy will be completed by lunchtime on Friday, 4th December, after ten weeks of tasting at 200 domaines and merchants across the Côte d’Or – preceded by excursions in the Mâconnais (report published here) and Chablis (report imminent). The full reports on the Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune, covering over 2,500 wines in all, will be released before the end of December.

This is the first zoom event offered under the JMIB Live banner. It is the first part of a series looking at some of the crucial themes in Burgundy.

There are no wines to be tasted except what you choose to open alongside, nor interviews with producers enthusing about the joys of their own wines.

Instead, Jasper will be analysing the underlying causes of the Premature Oxidation phenomenon, looking at the timeline over the last 25 years since the first affected vintage (1995):
